At the end of January 2023, Precision Neuroscience introduced the Layer 7 Cortical Interface brain implant, which is thinner than a human hair. The new technology helps patients with paralysis control digital devices using only neural signals.

Layer 7 Cortical Interface is an electrode array resembling a piece of tape and thinner than a human hair, which allows it to fit on the surface of the brain without damaging tissue. Built-in technology decrypts brain signals and translates them into commands for external technologies.

If the implant from Neuralink is intended to be implanted directly into brain tissue, the implant from Precision Neuroscience relies on a surgical technique that is designed to be less invasive. In order to implant the Layer 7 Cortical Interface array, the surgeon makes a very thin incision in the skull and inserts the device like a letter into a mailbox. Michael Mager, who is also CEO of Precision Neuroscience, reported that the crevice is less than 1mm thick - so small that patients don't even have to shave their hair off to perform the procedure.

The nature of the procedure allows Precision Neuroscience to easily increase the number of electrodes in the array, which Meiger said will eventually allow the Layer 7 Cortical Interface device to be used not only for paralysis treatment but also for neurological purposes. The procedure is also reversible if patients decide they no longer need an implant or want new versions in the future. The developers have successfully used their device to decode neural signals in animals, with scientists hoping FDA to win approval to test the technology in humans before early summer 2023.[1]
