Aluminocalcium alloys

2023: Researchers at the Moscow Polytechnic Institute proposed aluminum-calcium alloys as the basis for the development of a group of high-tech light materials

Researchers at the Moscow Polytechnic proposed aluminum-calcium alloys as the basis for the development of a group of high-tech light materials. The polytechnic announced this on February 7, 2023.

A group of scientists under the leadership of Candidate of Technical Sciences Torgom Hakobyan is engaged in the optimization of compositions and processing modes of high-tech aluminum alloys based on the Al-Ca system.

The material obtained in the course of research can be used both in the hydrogen power to replace heavy steel products and structures, and in the automotive industry, where the issue of mass remains one of the key ones.

Calcium is the third most abundant metal on earth (about 3.4%), second only to aluminum and iron, Hakobyan said. Its density is lower than that of other eutectic-forming elements, especially nickel and cerium.

According to previously obtained results, aluminum alloys based on eutectics containing calcium are technological, resistant to corrosion, have high specific strength. All this at a moderate cost.

To solve the problems set in the work, we use advanced methods of theoretical analysis of the structure of materials, for example, thermodynamic modeling, together with experimental research - X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, etc. We analyze the evolution of the structure of materials at various technological stages, and then determine the required complex of physical and mechanical properties, "said Torg Hakobyan.

Traditionally, aluminum alloys are divided into foundry and deformable alloys. In some cases, such a distinction leads to difficulties in their application in various complex structures.

On the other hand, the use of high-tech alloys that combine the advantages of both would overcome such limitations. The development of the material will significantly expand the application of aluminum alloys obtained both using traditional metallurgical technologies and using digital ones.
