2023: Building the System

The S. A. Lavochkin Scientific and Production Association (NPO) is creating a satellite system for remote sensing of the Earth (DZZ) for military purposes. This was announced on February 7, 2023 by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu at a conference call in the military department.

According to him, this system will contribute to improving the effectiveness of the troops. The Minister invited the meeting participants to consider the progress of the development work and determine the main deadlines for their implementation.

In November 2022, Valery Zaichko, deputy director of the department of navigation space systems of the state corporation, said that Roscosmos plans to launch nine Earth remote sensing satellites into orbit in 2023.

In accordance with the agreement on promising space systems and services, from 2023 to 2030 it is planned to produce and put into orbit more than 60 Earth remote sensing satellites and over 700 satellite communication devices.

Earlier, Shoigu said that recently space and cyberspace have been increasingly involved in military confrontation. According to the head of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, space and cyber commands appear in the armed forces of a number of countries, the main task of which "is not defense, but planning and conducting offensive operations in the relevant areas."

According to Shoigu, strengthening the combat component of the Russian Navy (Navy), the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) and the Strategic Missile Forces (Strategic Missile Forces) is necessary to ensure the guaranteed security of Russia. The minister announced this in January 2023.[1]
