2023: Artificial penis shows encouraging results

In early January 2023, it became known that scientists from the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou developed synthetic tissue that heals penis injuries and restores its normal functions.

According to Xuetao Shi, the author of the study, the aim of the work is to solve problems of male reproductive health, including erectile dysfunction. In addition, the results of the project can help in the treatment of Peyronie's disease - fibrosis of the protein membrane of cavernous bodies, which leads to curvature of the penis and sometimes provokes pain during erection.

The technology has been tested on male pigs

Scientists have created an artificial protein shell that imitates natural tissue. For this, polyvinyl alcohol was used, which made it possible to form a structure of twisted fibers similar to the natural one. The resulting synthetic material showed the necessary biomechanical properties. Next, the researchers conducted laboratory experiments to study the toxicity of the artificial structure, since it is intended for long-term stay in the body: it was found that the synthetic material should not have a harmful effect on other tissues.

The researchers then tested their technology on male pigs with damage to the penis's protein sheath: experiments have shown that artificial tissue allows erectile function to be restored. However, it is too early to talk about the application of the proposed method in practice - research continues.

Our work at this stage focuses on restoring one penile tissue, and the next stage will look at correcting a common penis defect or creating an artificial penis from a holistic point of view. The biggest advantage of artificial tissue is that it mimics the microstructure of the body's natural tissues, Shi said.[1]
