Arista VM Tracer

Product
Developers: Arista Networks
Technology: Virtualization

Arista VM Tracer represents program expansion of the specialized EOS operating system offered by the company which executes search of virtual machines and dynamically segments them in a virtual local area network. VM Tracer also executes autoconfiguration of virtual machines based on profiles of the ports defined in the server of VMware of ESX and supports several stations of administration VMware vCenter.

Arista was created by one of founders of SUN Microsystems, Andy Bekhtolskhaym. A main product of the company — the inexpensive switching system of high density of 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet for data processing centers supported by the expanded operating system.

In general the solution allows to improve visual representation of virtual environments, to simplify their configuring and to optimize the system of selection of resources.

  • VM Tracer allows the administrator of virtual machines to manage the virtualization platform. The tool visually represents virtual environment, allowing to see how the network behaves.
  • VM Tracer reports a host of ESX what interface of connection, then polls vCenter for identification of communications port host then EOS displays these communications.
  • VM Tracer reads out data of IPMI for each host then displays them in the EOS interface. The procedure of identification of hosts gives the administrator information on the connected interfaces that is required for selection of bandwidth and fault finding.

For identification of VM Tracer virtual machines defines through vCenter what virtual machines are connected to what virtual ports of a host ESX and what outgoing channels connect a host to the Arista switch. These communications are also displayed by EOS.

VM Tracer helps to simplify also configuring of a virtual local area network (VLAN) in the manual mode that is required in switches of other producers, by use of information mentioned above for "automatic" creation of VLAN networks on trunks a host switch and the switch switch of the IEEE 802.1Q standard. A system can support independent networks VLAN in different divisions of the enterprise, for example in laboratory, production department and also in a private cloud by connection with those stations vCenter which service these divisions.

To each copy of vCenter the range of VLAN ports which is not crossed with others for automatic creation and segmentation of virtual machines can be selected. When the virtual machine which is exceeding the limit of the selected range in vCenter it is created warning is sent.
