2023: Announcement of a robotic surgeon for knee replacement

In early March 2023, Stryker announced the release of the Mako Total Knee 2.0 total knee surgeon robot. The system was created based on the results of more than 500 thousand procedures, the manufacturer notes.

According to the press release, Mako Total Knee 2.0 includes intuitive design with customizable workflows and other key features. These include a digital tensioner for intraoperative assessment of knee stability in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). It does not require additional tools. According to the developers, the Mako Total Knee 2.0 system is based on the legacy Mako SmartRobotics technology and three key components. These include 3D CT-based planning, AccuStop tactile technology, and deep data analytics.

Stryker reported that Mako Total Knee 2.0 systems have already been installed in 35 countries by March 2023, and more than 1 million procedures have been carried out worldwide. The company began limited production of the systems in August 2022. It plans to continue phased implementation in 2023, starting with the United States and ending with a global launch in individual markets.

In addition to the Mako Total Knee 2.0, Stryker plans to launch two more products from the Mako line. The company plans to initially launch Mako Spine in the second half of 2024, followed by Mako Shoulder by the end of 2024.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) for 2023, knee replacement is one of the most popular orthopedic services. This is due to the fact that these joints are subjected to serious stress every day, wear out gradually or are injured as a result of negligence. Regardless of the etiology, joint deformity brings severe pain, which is very difficult to calm down. And the only effective way to get rid of torment is knee replacement.[1]
