2023: Development of a method for strengthening the surface layer of compressor blades of gas turbine engines

The Research Institute of Engine Technology and Organization (NIID, a branch of the United Engine Corporation of Rostec) has developed a method for strengthening the surface layer of compressor blades of gas turbine engines. It will increase the overhaul life of power plants by one and a half to two times. The UEC announced this on April 11, 2023.

NIID employees worked on the project for two years. As of April 2023, the development is being tested on the AI-222-25 process engine.

This method increased the hardening depth by almost 2.5 times and increased the fatigue strength of the blades by more than 18%. As for resource characteristics, it contributes to an increase in the overhaul life of the engine by about 1.5-2 times, - said Sergey Pavlinich, director of the branch of UEC NIID JSC.
