"EdgeÖåíòð" repelled a record DDoS attack in duration and power

2023: Repelling a cyberattack with Mitigator

Edge Cyber ​ ​ Attack Protection SystemCenter has blocked a DDoS attack with a capacity of more than 1.1 TB/s. It was organized on the servers of several gaming companies using a botnet and lasted more than 8 days. At its peak, its power exceeded 400 million packets per second. In total, the security system received more than 80 petabytes of traffic. This was announced on April 13, 2023 by the Skolkovo Foundation.

DDoS attacks do not go at peak power all the time. The amount of traffic either decreases or takes off. During this attack, peak volumes were sent to game servers within 12 hours. This is a rare case, because on average they last 15 minutes.

Attackers managed to achieve such a duration using a botnet - a network of infected devices (bots), which, at the command of hackers, send a huge amount of traffic to the victim's servers.

An integrated approach allowed the company to withstand the influx of traffic. To protect EdgeÖåíòð used BIFIT Mitigator (a software package for protecting against DDoS attacks and detecting them) and its own developments. For example, traffic was analyzed using the EdgeVector program, a DDoS anomaly analyzer, which the EdgeÖåíòð registered in the Computer Program Register in February 2023.

We understand how important an integrated approach is in repelling this kind of attack. New botnets constantly appear, attackers change tactics, attacks become more powerful and more difficult. Therefore, we regularly refine our protection system, expand the capacity of cleaning centers. As of April 2023, an attack of 1.1 Tbit/s is not the limit for us. Our defense is able to withstand attacks with a capacity of more than 3 TB/s, said Artyom Izbaenkov, director of cybersecurity development at EdgeÖåíòð.

Such powerful attacks incur huge losses to both target organizations and carriers. To independently receive voluminous and prolonged attacks, you need many summary channels, which most telecom operators cannot afford. And only an hour of downtime of a commercial organization can cost 1 million rubles - 8 days would result in large financial losses.

EdgeÖåíòð is a participant in many competitions and technology development events, one of the most promising companies in the market for content delivery, hosting and security solutions for any business. As of April 2023, the company's solutions are used in the field of telecommunications, finance, media, developers and publishers of computer games. According to forecasts of the cybersecurity department of the EdgeÖåíòð, the number of attacks on the entire Russian business in 2023 will grow by at least 50%. The financial sector is already experiencing explosive growth. Judging by this attack, the gaming sector is also at risk.
