Microsoft Virtual Machine Servicing Tool (VMST)

Product
Developers: Microsoft
Date of the premiere of the system: September, 2010
Technology: Virtualization

The Microsoft company submitted the new version of auxiliary tools for carrying out scheduled works on service of virtual machines in large corporate environments – Microsoft Virtual Machine Servicing Tool (VMST) 3.0.

The packet of VMST 3.0 represents a system for management of installation of corrections and can be used for service of virtual machines for the Hyper-V or Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 platform in the stopped or saved status. Besides, installation of updates and corrections for templates of virtual machines in the VM Template format, for the switched-off virtual machines and the disconnected virtual hard drives of VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) is supported if these templates, machines or disks are saved in VM Library of a virtual machine manager of SCVMM (System Center Virtual Machine Manager). For carrying out service in such situations installation of updates and corrections on virtual hard drives is executed using special function under the name Servicing Jobs (Works on service).

At start of the Servicing Jobs function start of the virtual machine via the console Windows Powershell interface is executed, then installation of updates is made, and then the virtual machine is switched off or remains in a pristanovlenny status. The disconnected virtual hard drives of VHD are updated by their assembling to the working server – installation of updates is executed using the DISM program (Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management – control and service of images at deployment).

A set of the VMST programs supports the centralized installation of updates or through a management system of SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager) 2007 SP1 or are newer, or through service of installation of updates Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) of the version 3.0 SP1 are not lower.

The packet of VMST 3.0 allows to install updates on the switched-off virtual machines which are in library of the SCVMM system (System Center Virtual Machine Manager) and also correction on virtual machines in the disconnected and suspended status directly on the server with a hypervisor and on templates of virtual machines. Besides, manual copying of a packet with updates on virtual hard drives in SCVMM library is supported, and in failover clusters based on the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system operational transfer of virtual machines from one physical server on another using Hyper-V Live Migration technology is supported.
