2023: Sentence - 13 years in prison

On May 22, 2023, Eurojust, an agency of the European Union dealing with the judiciary, announced that the head of the popular iSpoof number substitution service, Tejay Fletcher, was sentenced to prison for 13 years and 4 months.

The iSpoof platform allowed fraudsters to make calls on behalf of various legal organizations and government agencies, such as banks. In addition, the site sold tools for sending recorded messages and intercepting one-time passwords.

Law enforcement agencies began investigating the activities of iSpoof in October 2021 at the request of the British authorities. It is said that during the year - from August 2021 to August 2022 - about 10 million fraudulent calls were made through iSpoof around the world. According to estimates, the iSpoof platform earned more than €3.7 million within 16 months, while the real losses of citizens and businesses from the actions of attackers reached €115 million on a global scale.

In an international coordinated action led by Britain and backed by Eurojust and Europol, 142 people involved in iSpoof were arrested around the world. On November 8, 2022, law enforcement closed the service's website, and its servers were confiscated by the US and Ukrainian authorities. At the time of termination, approximately 59,000 users were registered at the iSpoof site.

Fletcher, who served as the chief administrator of iSpoof, was arrested on November 6, 2022. The investigation showed that he received more than €2 million in profits from illegal activities: the fraudster spent the money on luxury cars, expensive watches, etc. In April 2023, a 35-year-old man pleaded guilty. He was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court in London.[1]
