Scandinavian airlines start selling tickets for electric aircraft flights

Customers: SAS (Scandinavian Airlines)

Stockholm; Transport

Contractors: Heart Aerospace

Project date: 2023/05

On May 31, 2023, it became known that the multinational airline Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), the leading carrier of the Scandinavian countries, opened seat reservations for the first commercial flight of an electric passenger aircraft in its history.

This is a ES-30 aircraft developed by Heart Aerospace. It can take on board 30 passengers - this is the number of tickets offered by SAS. The historic flight, scheduled for 2028, will cost $179. It is noted that the route will run over the territory of Sweden, Norway or Denmark.

The aircraft is ES-30 driven by four electric motors. It is equipped with a battery system that provides a flight range of approximately 200 km. Thus, the ship is excellent for regional air travel over short distances - when traditional airliners are impractical to operate for economic reasons. The configuration of the battery compartment is not disclosed, but it is known that a fast 30-minute charging system is implemented. By the end of the 2030s, Heart Aerospace expects to double its range.

SAS President and CEO Anko van der Werff says the company has been a pioneer in the aviation industry since it was founded in 1946. For example, she was the first among commercial air carriers to fly across the North Pole. The first commercial flight of an electric aircraft will be another SAS achievement.

The fact that we can now invite passengers to enter a new chapter of aviation development is a natural continuation of our innovative approach and an important step towards more sustainable commercial air travel, "said Anko van der Werff.[1]
