2023: Theft of $35 million in hacking
On June 3, 2023, the Atomic Wallet cryptocurrency wallet reported a hacker attack that stole assets worth more than $35 million. Information security experts are investigating the incident.
The Atomic Wallet service gives users the ability to store various cryptocurrencies. The wallet is offered for all common operating systems, including Windows, Android, iOS, macOS and Linux. Atomic Wallet's user base exceeds 5 million people worldwide.
It is said that the first reports of platform hacking began to arrive on June 2, 2023. Many users were affected, but about half of all losses - about $17 million - fell on five wallets. The largest single damage amounted to $7.95 million. Atomic Wallet officials said on Twitter that the investigation was ongoing. The service is collaborating with third-party experts to try to block the sale of stolen funds on cryptocurrency exchanges. In addition, possible vectors of a hacker attack are established.
Nothing has been confirmed yet. A support team compiles a list of victims. Contacted major exchanges and blockchain analytics companies to track and block the stolen money, Atomic Wallet said in a statement. |
Some users report that their cryptocurrency assets were stolen after a recent software update. However, other victims report not downloading the update. According to available information, the problem may be related to an outdated dependency package. Atomic Wallet security is gathering information about which operating system victims of the hack are using, where they downloaded the software and what they were doing before the cryptocurrency was stolen.[1]
