2023: LNG Technology Announcement

On June 13, 2023, Novatek announced the creation of a large-capacity technology for liquefying natural gas (LNG) based on mixed refrigerants. The patented development was called the Arctic Mix.

According to the press service of Novatek, LNG technology has been developed for the implementation of large-tonnage projects of the company based on gravity-type bases with a capacity of one production line of more than 6 million tons of LNG per year. The use of mixed refrigerants expands the geography of use of the technology, contributes to increasing the energy efficiency of the technological process and reducing the amount of equipment used, the company said.

They added that this development is an important step in localizing liquefaction trains and corresponds to the Company's strategic goal for the development of LNG technologies in Russia. The use of key technological equipment from Russian manufacturers will increase the competitiveness of Novatek's large-capacity LNG projects.

Novatek previously had its own liquefaction technology - the Arctic Cascade. A patent for it was obtained back in 2018. It was implemented on the fourth line of the Yamal LNG project, the capacity of which is 950 thousand tons per year.

In April 2023, the company received a Russian patent for the Arctic Cascade Modified liquefaction technology. Then the company reported that this technology is planned to be used on large-capacity LNG projects of the company in the Arctic region with a capacity of one technological line of 3 million tons per year.

By June 2023, Novatek, in addition to the existing Yamal LNG project, is implementing the Arctic LNG-2 project with a design capacity of 19.8 million tons per year. The first line of the plant should be launched in December 2023, the launch of the second stage is expected in 2024, the third - in 2026.[1]
