WebP

In October, 2010 Google suggested to use a new graphic format - WebP (.webp) allowing to squeeze images more effectively in comparison with a format most popular today - JPEG.

In the company consider that use of WebP-images on the website will allow to reduce load time of pages, to reduce traffic and to receive brighter impressions of work with a resource in general. Specialists of Google calculated that information stored on Web servers for 65% consists of digital images, and 90% from them are written in the JPEG format. If their size managed to be reduced by 40%, it would allow to release huge resources.

Technology of compression

WebP uses predictive coding, a method which is used in the VP8 video codec for compression of the personnel, released On2 Technologies company in 2008. In processing the computer takes data from the next blocks of pixels of the image to calculate (to predict) values for the following blocks. Then coding of a difference between the real and calculated values is executed. This difference as a rule contains a large number of zero and easily gives in to a compression.

According to Google, WebP is capable to provide 40 percent economy in comparison with the JPEG format, and without the difference seen to a human eye, i.e. the same effect as, for example, when translating the image from the BMP format in JPEG is reached.

Shortcomings

As told in Google, image coding in WebP borrows in 8 times more of time in comparison with the JPEG format. However this problem can be solved with growth of computing powers. Besides, on hardware-assisted computers Google WebM image processing in the WebP format will take less time. The company provided a format of compression of videos WebM in May, 2010. It also is free and open.
