2023: Implementation of ChatGPT counterpart to combat cyber threats

On June 27, 2023, the Israeli security service "Shin-Bet" introduced AI into its work and uses the technology to prevent serious threats.

Among the measures taken by Shin Bet (the Israeli counterpart of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation or the British MI5) was the creation of its own generative AI platform, similar to ChatGPT or Bar. Shin-Bet director Ronen Bar said that AI helped optimize the service by noting anomalies in surveillance data and sorting "infinite" data. According to him, technology plays a secondary role in decision-making, "like a partner at the table or a co-pilot."

He called for cooperation between commercial high-tech and government agencies such as Shin-Bet so that AI would lead to evolution rather than  revolution.

In Israel, on March 16, 2020, the use of geolocation data from smartphones to track suspicious traffic was legalized. Shin-Bet has been known to collect data from phones since about 2002. The Prime Minister of the country has authorized Shin-Bet to monitor the movements of patients with positive COVID-19 coronavirus test results and determine at the beginning of 2020 who should be quarantined. Officials for 2020 said the data would be used "pointwise, temporarily and limited."

According to Israeli laws, for espionage against Israel, as well as the disclosure of important secret information of the country and its transfer to the special services of other countries, the death penalty or life imprisonment is provided, as well as terms from 3 to 15 years, depending on the harm caused to the security of Israel.

Israel for June 2023 is considered one of the leaders in the field of AI, thanks to the booming computing and robotics industry, which relies on talents developed in the technologically advanced conscription army.[1]
