Brazil gets Russian particle accelerator to purify Amazon basin water

Customers: Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research (IPEN)

Education and Science

Project date: 2023/06

The Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (INF SB RAS), together with the Institute of Electron Beam Technologies (EB-tech Co., Ltd., South Korea), created and supplied a mobile industrial accelerator for disinfection and purification of the water of local rivers to the Brazilian Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research (IPEN). The press service of the INF SB RAS announced this on June 28, 2023.

Our colleagues from Brazil have acquired a mobile version of the industrial accelerator - this installation is suitable for experiments outside stationary laboratories, for example, for the treatment and disinfection of wastewater that enters the tributaries of the Amazon River, says Alexei Korchagin, senior researcher at the INF SB RAS. - Usually industrial accelerators are located in concrete silos, but this model was designed specifically for specific customer tasks and is a compact accelerator with lead protection installed in a heavy trailer.

The Amazon is the longest and fullest river in the world, with the largest basin area of more than 7 million square meters. km The waters of many rivers included in its basin are contaminated with industrial and household waste.

The device, poisoned in Brazil, is a mobile version of the accelerator of the ELV series with an energy of 0.7 MeV and a beam current of 28 mA. It is suitable for conducting experiments outside stationary laboratories.

Devices of this type are used for radiation treatment of wires, medical devices and pharmaceuticals, as well as for sterilization of food products. The development of the NPI is compact and relatively simple in design, the institute said. The technology by June 2023 is used in, USA,, Japan,, Koreas,, China,, and Malaysia.
