2023: Loss of $85 million due to hacker attack

Brunswick Corporation, the world's largest manufacturer of pleasure craft, disclosed the damage from a serious cyber attack in early August 2023. The hacker invasion became known in June 2023. It is said that the attackers caused damage in the amount of approximately $85 million.

Chief executive Dave Foulkes told investors and board members the attack had a "devastating impact on the company's financial outlook." Many information systems within Brunswick's computer infrastructure were affected.

Brunswick reveals damage from serious cyber attack

On June 13 [2023], we announced that we were significantly impacted by a major IT security incident that ultimately led to financial results below initial expectations. The failure associated with the cyber attack was the most significant in our engine segments, as well as spare parts and accessories for power plants, - said Foulkes.

The company said all major global manufacturing and distribution facilities are fully operational as of mid-August 2023 with no significant residual impact. Brunswick says it has the ability to restore some of the lost production and distribution to businesses, offsetting downtime from the hacker intrusion.

No hacker group has claimed responsibility for the attack on the pleasure craft manufacturer. Therefore, it is not clear whether the incident is related to the implementation of a ransomware program. But it is emphasized that thanks to the hard work of Brunswick's IT and business groups, as well as numerous external partners, the company has made significant progress in restoring the functionality of its systems and resuming operations at facilities where production or distribution has been suspended.^[1]
