2023: Beginning of banana cultivation in industrial volumes in Kazakhstan

The Turkish company GenGroup Qazaqstan began growing bananas in the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan. It is the country's first industrial-scale banana production. This was announced by the Ministry of Agriculture of the republic on August 14, 2023.

It is noted that in the near future the greenhouse will expand by another five hectares, which will allow producing about 1 thousand tons of bananas per year. The first harvest is planned to be harvested in 6-8 months. In addition to exotic fruit, tomatoes and strawberries will be grown in greenhouses.

GenGroup Qazaqstan built in Kazakhstan with banana trees, the variety of which was specially bred and adapted to Kazakh local conditions.

The cost of the project at the first stage is $4 million. During the construction, the Turkish company used high-strength structures, greenhouses are equipped with climate control and an adaptive nutrition system, which make it possible to fully unleash the genetic potential of plants even in the most unfavorable weather conditions, the Kazakh Ministry of Agriculture said.

As Tengri News notes, they learned to grow bananas in the Turkestan region back in 2020. A local resident Halima Seitkerimova decided on the experiment.

After I bought seedlings, I developed an interest in bananas. She began to study the technology of caring for them. As it turned out, we can grow a tropical plant. This year I have harvested for the first time in nine years, - said Halima Seitkerimova in early August 2023.

In total, there are about 40 banana trees in the garden of Halima Seitkerimova, but only one has borne fruit. This is due to inappropriate weather conditions, the agrarian suggests. Compared to other fruits and vegetables, banana is very fragile.[1]
