2023: Creation of data centers with nuclear reactors
In mid-August 2023, it became known that the American company Green Energy Partners (GEP), in partnership with IP3 International, a nuclear technology firm, began creating a network of data centers (DPCs) with nuclear reactors.
The project envisions a 641-acre (approximately 2.6 square kilometer) industrial park located in Virginia's Sarri County. At the first stage, data centers will receive power from two reactors of the nearby Sarri nuclear power plant. In the future, it is planned to build small modular reactors (SMR), as well as backup generators running on hydrogen (they will be used instead of traditional diesel generators).
It is noted that SMRs are nuclear reactors of relatively small size and capacity. The units of such reactors are built at the plant, and then transported, assembled and put into operation at a specially prepared site. In the case of the GEP and IP3 International project, we are talking about the creation of four to six plants, each of which will be able to provide capacity at the level of 250 MW. However, as IP3 International CEO Michael Hewitt notes, ultimately the number of reactors will depend on the technology used. In any case, the commissioning of such power plants would require approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
After SMR operation, their thermal energy will be used to maintain electrolysis to produce hydrogen. It is planned to be used not only for the internal needs of the data center campus, but also to maintain the Virginia power system. The amount of investment in the project is not reported.[1]
