2023: Police officers' attempted bribe case reopened

On August 25, 2023, the 6th California Circuit Court of Appeals reopened the case against Apple security chief Thomas Moyer, who is accused of trying to bribe police officers.

According to court records, Moyer offered bribes to Captain James Jensen, as well as to Junior Sheriff Rick Sung in Santa Clara County, California, in exchange for several licenses for concealed carrying of firearms. For the relevant documents, Moyer promised a "reward" in the form of 200 iPad tablets worth more than $50 thousand.

The charge against Moyer, originally brought by a grand jury in 2020, was dismissed by a lower court in 2021. However, prosecutors appealed and won. Apple's security team under Moyer began to worry about "its ability to respond to serious threats" against company chief Tim Cook, the ruling said. Applications for firearms permits were sent in 2018, but paperwork was badly delayed - even though Moyer donated to Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith's reelection campaign.

According to the decision, the investigation into Moyer will be resumed. The case file notes that Smith signed licenses for Apple employees only in January 2019, but the applicants were never able to obtain them. In 2022, a special jury found Smith guilty in a civil lawsuit, finding that she had abused her authority to issue concealed firearm permits in exchange for donations for her election campaign.

We strongly believe that the appellate court reached the wrong conclusion. Thomas Moyer did not commit a crime, and we will continue to fight in this case until he is acquitted, the suspect's lawyers said.[1]
