Norilsk Nickel began using the Russian system of remote control of machines in mines and will now save a lot

At the end of August 2023, it became known that specialists from the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University (NSTU) named after R.E. Alekseeva developed an import-substituting system for autonomous and remote control of mine dump trucks and loading and delivery machines. The technology is being introduced by PJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel to save costs.

The platform is a set of local hardware and software systems that are combined at the operator level. The system allows you to operate the equipment in autonomous and remote modes, as well as remotely control the loading and unloading of ore. The complex provides transportation of ore to the surface during the shift break and during blasting operations in the mine. In this case, the operator works remotely on the surface. The maximum speed of movement in automatic mode is determined by the settings of the complex.

The machine moves in automatic mode along a pre-set route until the programmed task is completed, or until the operator switches the machine to another mode, the developers said.

According to the head of the Nizhny Novgorod Scientific and Educational Center Timur Khalitov and the director of the Institute of Transport Systems of NSTU Anton Tumasov, the new system allows to bring workers from dangerous working conditions to the surface and reduce equipment downtime. In addition, significant cost savings are achieved: thanks to the automation of operations, labor costs in some cases can be reduced by 50%. The complex is suitable for use in deep mines with high pressure. The system will completely replace the analogues of Swedish and Australian companies, which is important in the current geopolitical situation.^[1]
