2023: Car recall due to fire threat

The American divisions of the Korean automakers Hyundai Motor and Kia recalled about 3.4 million cars due to the risk of fire in the engine compartment. This was announced on September 27, 2023 by the press service of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

We are talking about cars produced from 2010 to 2017. Car owners were advised to park their vehicles on the street away from buildings until repairs were carried out over the cars. Hyundai plans to announce to its customers soon the need to bring its vehicles for repairs to nearby dealerships. Kia is still looking for solutions to the problem.

The vehicle's anti-lock braking system module can leak brake fluid inward and cause a short circuit. An electrical short circuit can lead to significant voltage overload in the ABS module, increasing the risk of fire in the engine compartment during movement or parking, the NHTSA explained.

In the Hyundai line, the fire threat is present in the Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Coupe, Equus, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport, Sonata HEV, Tucson, Tucson Fuel Cell, Veloster and Veracruz models.

Kia has a defect found in cars Cadenza, Forte, Forte Koup, K900, Optima, Optima Hybrid, Rio, Rondo, Sorento, Soul and Sportage.

The companies noted that at the moment they are not aware of the loss of life due to car fires in the United States. Kia recorded one case of fire in the engine compartment, three cases of fire and six cases of melting components in their cars.

According to NHTSA, 21 car fires and 22 "heat incidents" have recently been recorded in the United States, which included smoke or melting.[1]
