IBM prepares new large updating for the Cognos BI platform (Business Intelligence) which includes new opportunities for joint work, statistical analysis and work on mobile devices, such as Apple iPad.
"BI work areas" are the base of the Cognos 10 platform which will become available on October 30, representatives of IBM on Monday during the Information on Demand conference said, in Las Vegas.
The new functionality of the platform will give to users the chance to get access to the different BI tools from the single interface which can be changed as it is pleasant to them. The idea is in giving to users the chance of transition from simple tasks to more difficult, without the need for making changes in a context of applications, Mychelle Mollot, the vice president for the business analysis of the company said.
Big Blue adds in to Cognos 10 support of social networks and joint work, building in own Lotus Connections program the platform. As approves IBM, thus users will be able to participate in a business talk and to benefit more from the software.
One more new feature of the platform under the name "Active Reports" allows to receive interactive reports on e-mail without the need for the software installation. Users can interact with them and make decisions on the run instead of returning to office or to open the long PDF file which is not interactive at all, declared Mollot.
In addition in Cognos 10 statistics mechanism for the software of SPSS will appear (a statistical packet for social researches). This function will become a part of the block of reports of Cognos that will allow users to receive data from historical data. Besides, Cognos 10 will support mobile devices Apple - iPhone and iPad and also BlackBerry, Symbian-phones and devices with Windows Mobile OS, announced IBM.
The Cognos 10 platform "impresses with the scope" though not all product capabilities reached new level, Boris Evelson, the analyst of Forrester Research commented. According to him, active reports are of particular importance for success of the platform. "We constantly speak about a business intelligence on mobile devices. It is much more useful when this function is available in the standalone mode or the notebook which is switched-off from a global network. Often BI systems give the chance of viewing data on mobile devices, but not full to work", - the expert said.
Information Builders and Oracle had similar technologies some time, he added. It is worth noticing that Oracle still has several modules providing interaction of mobile devices with a basic system, however their most part is related to quality control systems of production or inventory.
Therefore working spaces of BI in Cognos 10, definitely, a step in the right direction, but in addition at IBM are also an opportunity to develop the further concept, Evelson told. Not clearly only, adding of Lotus Connections, at least, now will be how significant. The question is in whether will be able to receive Lotus a considerable market share concerning Microsoft Office. Then, if it occurs, integration with Cognos will become very important, he added.
