2023: Product Announcement

At the end of September 2023, British researchers from the University of Bristol announced the development of SmartSocks, which allow you to collect information about the vital signs of the owner's body. Milbotix startup has been formed to commercialize the product.

Socks are designed primarily to monitor the condition of dementia patients. According to WHO estimates, as of the beginning of 2023, more than 55 million people worldwide suffer from this disease, of which more than 60% live in low or middle-income countries. Almost 10 million new cases of dementia are reported each year. This disease ranks seventh among the leading causes of death in the world and is among the leading causes of disability in the elderly. SmartSocks is designed to improve the condition of patients with such neurodegenerative disorders.

Sensors integrated into SmartSocks track heart rate and sweating levels, and record movements. The data collected make it possible to conclude about a person's well-being, in particular, to predict the possible increase in anxiety and aggression. Thus, medical staff or caregivers of dementia patients can take the necessary measures in advance to stabilize the condition, for example, to give a sedative or other drug.

The socks do not require a battery to work - they are powered by human heat. SmartSocks do not create discomfort when wearing and are not afraid of machine washing. Startup Milbotix as of the end of September 2023 attracted more than $670 thousand from about 500 investors for development. The funding will be used to expand the engineering team and conduct comprehensive clinical investigators.[1]
