2023: Product Announcement

October 30, 2023 scientists of the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University. Lomonosov and specialists of the Institute. Kurchatov presented the X-ray spectrometer LomonosovXAS. It will be used at the Department of Radiochemistry of Moscow State University.

Spectroscopy is one of the most universal methods of studying the structure of a substance, which does not destroy the substance itself and its structure. The method is based on the use of electromagnetic radiation to obtain and further study the spectrum of matter.

Our spectrometer is not inferior in resolution to mega-heights installations - synchrotrons. And the device also allows us to conduct two types of studies in the X-ray range - absorption spectroscopy and emission spectroscopy - commented on the invention, junior researcher at the Department of Radiochemistry of Moscow State University Daniil Novichkov.

The new spectrometer uses XAS technology - X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. Previously, synchrotrons were used for XAS spectroscopy. However, synchrotrons were not suitable for some substances (for example, radioactive materials such as actinides). With LomonosovXAS, scientists will be able to study actinides indoors in the laboratory without risks to health and equipment.

In addition to availability, the main advantage of the invention is its high resolution. Thanks to this, scientists can consider substances in dynamics and track any changes in structure. This will help to better understand the nature of chemical reactions and offer solutions to fundamental chemistry problems. The main direction in which scientists are going to work is the physical chemistry of atomic energy, especially the problems of long-term disposal of nuclear waste. In addition, the spectrometer will be used to prepare students.[1]
