2024
The production of porcelain dishes in Russia for the year decreased by 64.1% to 1.48 million pieces
The production of canteen and kitchenware made of porcelain in Russia in 2024 decreased to 1.48 million units, which is 64.1% less than in 2023. This was announced by the analytical company Alto Consulting Group in October 2025.
The massive decline reflects structural changes in the market. The reduction in domestic demand and the reorientation of buyers to more affordable alternatives led to a sharp drop in output. The industry is going through one of the most difficult periods in its history.
The leading region in terms of output was the Volga Federal District. The district accounted for 82.4% of all manufactured products in Russia. The concentration of production in one region emphasizes its strategic importance in shaping supply. The Volga region plays a key role in maintaining industry potential.
In the period from 2022 to 2024, there was an increase in producer prices for porcelain dishes. The average price increased from ₽179,5 apiece to ₽228,6 apiece. Growth was 27.4% in two years. The rise in the cost of products has reduced the availability of goods for buyers.
In June 2025, the trend changed. The average price decreased by 40.3% by May and amounted to ₽141,3 apiece. The sharp drop indicates an attempt by the market to adapt to new conditions. Manufacturers seek to maintain positions in the face of a decrease in the purchasing power of the population.
Analysts at Alto Consulting Group highlighted the main reasons for the reduction in the production of porcelain dishes in 2024:
- reduced consumer demand due to high competition with cheaper materials, including ceramics and glass;
- the rise in producer prices in 2022-2024, caused by the rise in the cost of raw materials and energy costs;
- regional concentration of production - key capacities are concentrated in the Volga region;
- import influence - foreign manufacturers actively promote products on the Russian market;
- price fluctuations in 2025 reflecting supply and demand imbalances.[1]
Reduction of cutlery production by 12.5% to 17.3 thousand units
The production of cutlery in Russia in 2024 amounted to 17.3 thousand units, which is 12.5% less than in 2023. The category included spoons, forks, ladles, spoons, cake paddles, fish and oil knives, sugar tongs and other kitchen and dining products. The absolute leader in terms of volumes was the Volga Federal District, where 86.4% of all Russian production is concentrated. This is evidenced by the data of the analytical company Alto Consulting Group, released in October 2025.
The leadership of the Volga Federal District is explained by the region's historical specialization in the metallurgical and manufacturing industries, as well as the presence of large manufacturers operating both for the domestic market and for export. In the period from 2022 to 2024, the average prices of manufacturers for knife and cutlery showed multidirectional dynamics.
Reasons for the reduction in cutlery production:
- Decrease in consumer activity in the segment of low-cost products.
- Increased competition from imports and alternative materials.
- Growing interest in premium design kits.
- Increase in production costs due to changes in raw materials and energy prices.
- Active development of online sales channels, which supports demand in certain categories.
For three years, there was an overall decrease in prices by 5.7% - from ₽1 286.9 apiece to ₽1 213.2 apiece. This correction is associated with market saturation and increased competition among manufacturers. However, in mid-2025, the situation changed. In July, the average price of manufacturers increased by 9.9% compared to June and amounted to ₽833,8 apiece. This jump reflects changes in production costs and market price adjustments in response to rising costs.
Significant changes are also recorded in the retail segment. The largest increase in average prices for cutlery sets occurred in 2023, when the growth was 20.3%. In July 2025, the retail price showed a minimum increase - 0.1% by June and amounted to ₽514,8 per set.[2]
Increase in imports of dishes to Russia by 2% to 668 million units
According to the Analysis of the Utensils Market in Russia, prepared by BusinesStat in 2025, in 2024 its imports to the country increased by 2% compared to 2023 and in 2024 amounted to 668 million units.
For 2023-2024, its imports to the country increased by 34% compared to 2022. Consumer incomes grew, the assortment expanded, which was due to the reorientation of import flows to the East. In particular, in two years, supplies from China increased by more than 50%, its share in the total import of dishes reached almost 80%.[3]
The production of tableware for the year increased by 7% to 472 million units
The production of tableware in Russia in 2024 increased by 7% compared to the previous period and reached 472 million units. The recovery in production volumes occurred after a two-year period of reduction, although the pre-crisis indicators of 2021 have not yet been achieved. The data are published in an analytical study by BusinesStat in early July 2025.
According to experts, the growth of production was ensured by the established supply of raw materials and equipment, as well as the restoration of domestic demand for products. The largest increase was recorded in the segments of inexpensive glass and plastic dishes compared to other categories of goods.
For the period 2022-2023, the production of tableware in the country decreased by 13% compared to the level of 2021. The decrease in output was caused by a complex of negative factors that affected the entire industry.
The main reasons for the fall in production were the rise in price and the shortage of raw materials in a number of positions. Manufacturers have faced a shortage of various chemical additives, dyes, stainless steel and clay required for the manufacturing process.
Logistics difficulties and an increase in transportation costs further increased the cost of production. The increase in rates on commercial loans complicated the financing of production activities of enterprises in the industry.
The leading enterprises of the dinnerware industry in Russia are:
- PJSC "Ashinsky Metallurgical Plant";
- LLC "ZPI" Alternative ";
- LLC "Utensils";
- Experimental Glass Plant LLC;
- JSC "Kerch Metallurgical Plant."
Difficulties with the maintenance of foreign equipment and the lack of qualified personnel have become additional obstacles to the stable operation of production facilities. These factors collectively led to a significant reduction in the output of tableware.[4]
Sales of dishes and household goods for the year increased by 13% to ₽20 billion
In mid-May 2025, analytical company AnalyticResearchGroup (ARG) published a report according to which in 2023 the total revenue of Russian companies operating in the retail segment of dishes and household goods reached a record ₽17,8 billion. This value is 5.2 times higher than in 2022. At the end of 2024, the market grew by about 13%, coming close to the mark of ₽20 billion.
According to RBC, such a sharp jump can be explained by both the real growth in sales and the peculiarities of the samples and the methodology of official statistics. The average annual growth rate (CAGR) for the period from 2005 to 2023 was 18.6%, which indicates the confident development of the industry over the past years.
The forecast for 2025 demonstrates cautious optimism: experts expect a decrease in revenue by 7.2% - up to ₽18,6 billion, which may be due to fluctuations in demand, inflationary pressure and changes in consumer preferences. In the long term, positive dynamics are expected to continue. ARG estimates that the market size could reach ₽36,5 billion by 2029 at a CAGR of 12.7%.
Quarterly dynamics confirm the high sensitivity of the market to external economic conditions. In the fourth quarter of 2023, a historical maximum of revenue was recorded - ₽7,5 billion, which is several times higher than in previous years. For comparison, the minimum value of ₽485 million was recorded in the second quarter of 2020 amid a pandemic recession.
In the third quarter of 2024, revenue amounted to ₽4,1 billion, which is 14.5% lower than in the same period in 2023. Despite this, the indicators remain significantly higher than the pre-pandemic level, which indicates structural growth and a gradual recovery of the industry.[5]
2023
Sales of porcelain dishes in Russia for the year increased by 17%
The volume of sales of porcelain dishes in Russia in 2023 reached 147 million units, an increase of 17% compared to 2022. Such data analysts BusinesStat released in early December 2024. According to experts, this is a record figure over the past five years.
The study notes that sales of porcelain dishes showed fluctuations between 2019 and 2023. In 2019, 116 million units were sold, and in 2020 the volume decreased to 111 million units, which is 4% less than the previous level. In 2021, the market showed significant growth - by 25%, sales reached 139 million units. However, in 2022, a drop of 9% was recorded, and sales amounted to 126 million units. The recovery began in 2023, when sales increased by 17% and reached a record value of 147 million units.
The key growth factors were pent-up demand caused by crisis conditions in 2022 and the restoration of the purchasing power of Russians. An increase in household incomes and a decrease in inflationary pressure contributed to the intensification of demand. Among other reasons, analysts noted the rise in domestic tourism, the expansion of the range of products on marketplaces and the development of online stores.
Competition in the Russian china ware market continues to intensify. Under the conditions of European sanctions and the departure of Western companies, the vacated niches were quickly occupied by Russian and Chinese manufacturers. They not only increased production volumes, but also began to introduce new decoration technologies, offer unique designs and combinations of materials.
The look of the utensils remains a key choice factor, according to the study. Products of non-standard shapes are popular, as well as products selected for the interior of the kitchen or dining room. Special growth is demonstrated by the segments of children's dishes and products in vintage style.[6]
10.4% increase in biodegradable disposable cookware sales to 2.1 billion units
In 2023, the volume of consumption of disposable biodegradable dishes in Russia in physical terms reached 2.1 billion units of products. This is 10.4% more than the previous year, as stated in the NeoAnalytics review published on May 21, 2024.
It is noted that the trend in the consumption of environmentally friendly products influenced, among other things, the sphere of disposable dishes. The main drivers of the market are catering establishments. Every year there are more and more companies that are abandoning plastic in favor of environmentally friendly products. In Russia, as of 2024, the range of biodegradable dishes and packaging is represented primarily by products made of paper and cardboard from insoluble cellulose. Such products account for 97% -98% of the market. The volume of production from other plant materials, such as industrial hemp and miscanthus, for example, is small.
The study says that the import of disposable biodegradable dishes to Russia in 2023 in physical terms was recorded at just over 2 thousand tons. This is 10.5% more compared to 2022, when purchases were estimated at 1.9 thousand tons. Retrospective analysis shows that since 2014, the volume of imports has gradually decreased, although an increase was noted in 2019. Due to the fact that the price factor plays an important role in choosing products, imported products gradually become uncompetitive due to the rise in price. Thanks to this, the share of domestic production in 2023 amounted to 95%.
In terms of exporting disposable biodegradable dishes, Russia's potential is small. Chinese manufacturers are firmly in the global market, supplying huge volumes at very low prices. Therefore, almost all manufactured products are consumed domestically.[7]
2022: Decrease in porcelain sales growth by 9.1% to 126.5 million units
The volume of the Russian china ware market in 2022 decreased by 9.1% (to 126.5 million units) compared to the previous year, when sales of these products increased by 25.2%. This is evidenced by the data of the analytical company BusinesStat, released in November 2023.
According to the researchers, the beginning of the military special operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine and the subsequent Western sanctions had a less significant impact on the dishes market than a number of experts expected. Despite a significant increase in prices, the decline in sales was not so strong. The unfavorable economic situation led to a decrease in promotional activity on the part of manufacturers and distributors, and this had a serious impact on sales, since in recent years the habit of purchasing products under the promotion with serious discounts from consumers has already taken root in the utensils market.
BusinesStat notes that the porcelain utensils market is influenced by a number of negative factors, including the loss of unique recipes for making products, filling the market with low-quality porcelain utensils, and a decrease in household income and purchasing power. In a crisis, consumer preferences are shifting from porcelain to cheaper ceramic and glassware. At the same time, the development of online commerce can be attributed to positive factors affecting the sale of porcelain dishes.
In 2020, when offline stores were closed due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, a rapid increase in online sales was recorded. In 2022, the share of online trading in the total retail of the utensils market as a whole exceeded 10%, since the largest players increased their turnover faster than other, smaller projects, and together with online stores of federal chains, they concentrated over half of online utensils sales, the study adds.[8]
