Biography

Very little is known about the composer Ignatius Dubrovsky.  In 1794 he was accepted as a violinist into the First Court Orchestra, in 1800 he was admitted to participate in generosity concerts as a soloist.

Dubrovsky's only extant work is Variations on the Russian song "Like Our Wide Court." The play was published in Dietmar's edition under the title: Air russe varie pour violon avec accommodation de basse/Compose et dedie a monsieur N. N. par Ignace Dubrowsky. In the " Consolidated Catalog of Russian Musical Editions" there is a dating "around 1805 ."

The song "Like Our Wide Court" ( in the spelling of that time - Like Nashev's Shirokov Court) is one of the most popular melodies of the late XVIII - early XIX centuries. The theme of this song has been repeatedly processed, the most famous variants are I. G. Variations. V. Palshau (1795 ), the second parts of the Violin Concerto in A major I. Zhernovik (c. 1795 ) and the " Russian" symphony of E. Vanzhura (1798). In addition, the melody is depicted on the cover of fortepiano organizé (hybrid of piano and organ ) by master Gabran, stored in the Pavlovsky Palace.

Dubrovsky's work was discovered in the Ulyanovsk Regional Scientific Library, in the Solovtsov collection. Thanks to the support of the project "Cultural Capital of the Volga Region," the artistic director of the EARLYMUSIC festival, violinist Andrei Reshetin, was able to get acquainted with this collection. In 2023, the first recording of variations took place, which was published on the disc "Who could love so passionately" of the ensemble "Soloists of Catherine the Great."
