On November 17, 2023, the American company Paragonix Technologies announced the release of the specialized BAROguard Donor Lung Preservation System, which provides the ability to safely transport inflated human lungs for transplantation. The solution is already used in surgical operations, helping to save the lives of patients.

It is claimed that BAROguard is the first commercially available hypothermic preservation system designed to automatically control pressure in the airway of donor lungs when they are outside the body. The complex is designed for preservation and transportation of the organ. It is noted that previously available funds did not allow to reliably maintain and control inflationary pressure in donor lungs. The BAROguard complex solves these problems.

The system combines the technology of hypothermic preservation with continuous and active pressure control in the air-carrying paths. This solution ensures that the donor's lungs are shielded from the traditional risks that arise during transportation: they are constantly kept in the optimal temperature range and clinically recommended pressure range. inflations The corresponding indicators are displayed in real time, which provides complete visibility of the lung condition during delivery to the recipient.

BAROguard allows you to maintain optimal parameters for preserving the organ along the entire transportation path. In particular, it was demonstrated that the system provides the necessary temperature and pressure values ​ ​ for many hours of transportation of donor lungs over distances of almost 1000 km. In general, the use of BAROguard improves the treatment outcomes of patients who require lung transplantation.^[1]
