On September 30, 2024, Stellantis, a multinational car manufacturing corporation, announced the recall of Jeep SUVs due to the risk of fire. As of this date, more than ten such incidents have been recorded.

The issue affects the 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrid machines. In these cars, the battery pack can be charged from the mains. Stellantis reports 13 cases of spontaneous ignition of these vehicles. Moreover, all of them at the time of the fire were in the parking lot with the power plant turned off.

Stellantis said in a notice that the risk of cars catching fire was reduced as the battery was discharged. Therefore, owners of these cars are advised to refrain from charging and park their SUVs away from buildings, other vehicles and other objects. Stellantis is working to resolve the issue: once the fix is ready, customers will be notified accordingly. Repair work will be carried out free of charge for owners.

The recall of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrids was another blow to the automaker, struggling with declining sales, falling securities and unrest among dealers and unions. Stellantis shares fell after the company cut its financial guidance for 2024.[1]

2023: Recall of 32,125 vehicles. Because of the marriage, they burn while charging

On November 22, 2023, Stellantis announced the recall of Jeep Wrangler hybrid SUVs with the ability to charge the battery pack from the electric grid. The identified problem can lead to spontaneous combustion of vehicles, which poses a threat to human life.

The defect affects the Jeep Wrangler 4xe cars of the 2021-2024 model range. They are complete with a 17- kVt·ch lithium-ion battery module, which the EPA estimates provides a range of up to 34km on electric traction. An internal combustion engine works in tandem with an electric motor.

As of November 2023, at least eight cases of Jeep Wrangler 4xe fire have been recorded. All these cars were in the parking lot with the power plant turned off. Moreover, six cars that caught fire were connected to the charging station. Stellantis says no one was injured in the incidents.

Owners of hybrids that have fallen under the recall can continue to use vehicles. However, Stellantis advises motorists to refrain from charging these cars through the electrical network until the problem is fixed. In addition, the company advises parking SUVs away from buildings, other vehicles and other objects that may suffer in the event of a spontaneous fire.

In total, 32,125 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs are subject to recall. Stellantis estimates that only 1% of these machines may have a problem. The defect will be fixed by updating the onboard software. In some cases, a battery pack may need to be replaced. Stellantis will notify customers to carry out service work so motorists can schedule service at a convenient time.[2]
