Technology developed for diagnosing traumatic brain injuries with laser through the eye

On November 29, 2023, British researchers from the University of Birmingham announced the development of a compact device that allows the diagnosis of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) through the eyes of the victim. For this, a health-safe laser complex is used.

Experts say there is an urgent need for new technologies to diagnose TBI in a timely manner, which are the leading cause of death worldwide. Such conditions (including concussion) develop immediately after the incident, however, many victims show few clinical symptoms in the early stages. Specialized procedures are based on MRI CT and expensive, and it takes considerable time to get results. Early diagnosis of TBI is crucial as life-saving treatment decisions must be made within the first hour of the incident. The new technology solves existing problems.

A device has been developed to diagnose traumatic brain injuries (TBI) through the eyes of the victim

The developed device scans the back of the eye, where the optic nerve is located, closely related to the brain: it carries the same biological information in the form of protein and lipid biomarkers. These biomarkers are in a tightly regulated balance, and therefore even the slightest changes can indicate the development of traumatic brain injury.

The system uses an eye-safe laser based on Raman spectroscopy to collect biomarker information. The obtained data are analyzed using artificial intelligence algorithms, which allows not only to diagnose TBI, but also to determine its severity. The analysis can be performed directly at the scene, which allows you to prescribe the necessary treatment as quickly as possible. Such installations can be equipped, for example, with ambulances.[1]

Presented a device worn on a smartphone camera to detect traumatic brain injury by pupil

On October 24, 2023, American engineers from the University of California, San Diego announced the development of a specialized accessory for smartphones that allows you to diagnose various neurological conditions. The device, in particular, is capable of detecting traumatic brain injuries and Alzheimer's disease. Read more here.

2020: Rostec presented ultrasound devices "Complexmed" with the function of diagnosing TBI

INEUM named after I.S. Brook"," which is part of Concern "Automatics" the State Corporation, Rostec on December 7, 2020 announced that it had completed the deep modernization ultrasonic of the devices of the Complexmed series. Depending on the configuration, the devices include an ultrasonic Doppler and/or echoencephalograph (synuscope), which will allow the doctor to assist in the prompt diagnosis of traumatic brain injuries and differential diagnostics. strokes More. here
