"The Kazakhstan railroads" optimize management of passenger and freight transportation using the solutions IBM System z

Customers: Kazakhstan Temir Zholy of Kazakhstanskiye KTS (Kazakstan Tem_r Sholas) Oil Company railroads

Astana; Transport

Product: IBM System Z Server platform of a mainframe

Project date: 2010/11  - 2011/09

National Company azastan tem_r zholy (KTZh Oil Company), implementing more than 60% of all cargo transportation of Kazakhstan, and IBM (IBM) corporation announced a project startup on creation of the disaster-proof computer system of high availability covering two distributed data processing centers of KTZh Oil Company. Project implementation is aimed at providing unceasing functioning of management systems for freight and passenger traffic as, by estimates, idle time of information systems leads to disorganization of process of transportations and losses about 940 million tenges a day (about 195 million rubles), says IBM.

As expected, project implementation with IBM will allow the customer to increase efficiency of productive and economic activity and to reduce risks of the losses connected with emergency situations. In particular, by project estimates, the guaranteed recovery time of operability of systems according to the results of project implementation will be about 20 minutes in comparison with several hours at the moment.

"Performance and fault tolerance of production systems of real time – a critical factor of ensuring activity of our company, – Ermek Kizatov, the vice president for development of KTZh Oil Company noted. – The slightest idle time of information systems leads to enormous monetary losses. Therefore we decided to provide the maximum reliability of system operation, having guaranteed failsafe functioning of an ACS passenger and freight transportation. We work with IBM more than 10 years, and the hardware-software IBM platform proved as exclusively reliable. The combination of innovations to the checked technologies in modern mainframes and storage systems of IBM is allowed to expect further development in the direction of optimization, rationalization and intellectualization of infrastructure".

Class servers a mainframe of IBM z9 and z10, two disk storage device subsystems of the class Hi-End – DS8700, FICON/SAN directors and two tape libraries TS3500 are a part of the solution. ACS are developed by passenger and freight transportation using software of IBM DB2, WebSphere MQ, WebSphere Application Server. Automatic recovery of operability of applications is provided using the software products IBM Tivoli NetView, System Automation and GDPS technologies, noted in IBM.

Within the project the computer system of high availability which creation is executed on the basis of technologies of a clustering of mainframes using a configuration of a parallel sysplex and mainframes of IBM z10 and z9 will be deployed. Infrastructure of the computer system covers geographically spaced data processing centers – the main and reserve that will ensure reliable disaster-proof operation of applications.

The contract was between IBM and KTZh Oil Company is signed in August, 2010. The project is going to be completed in the first half of the year 2011. The total cost of the project is 1.2 billion tenges (240 million rub). Besides, the memorandum of understanding concerning a possibility of cooperation between JSC Oil Company KTZh, IBM Eastern Europe / Asia and IBA Group a.s Limited liability company was also signed ".", Linux describing the directions of further cooperation between partners in a scope and open standards.
