The product is a subset of the Windows platform of Storage Server 2008 R2 created based on the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system and is intended for service of network information warehouses in the small organizations (up to 25 users), including without the selected IT personnel.

Developers note that installation and the R2 Essentials Windows Storage Server 2008 setup actually do not require high competence and efforts. It is enough to take the device with the preset R2 Essentials WSS 2008 system, to unpack, connect to network and to give a power supply. After that control of the drive is exercised via the web interface using any standard browser. The control panel the drive allows to administer, service and control a status both the drive based on WSS Essentials, and client computers.

The R2 Essentials "Breckenridge" WSS 2008 platform is included into family of new server products for the house and small office under the general name "Colorado". Products of this family contain the general feature set and controls based on such products as Windows Home Server ("Vail") and Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials ("Aurora").

Among functions which are offered by the Storage Server Essentials platform to users of network drives of initial level, – means for backup of client PCs and servers and also tools for recovery of separate files and folders or images of disks/systems entirely. Also the centralized storage of any files with collective access is supported. The convenient web interface is available to administration not only from a local network, but also practically from any place in the world. Condition monitoring of the network used for access to the general data is supported both for the client systems with the Windows operating system, and for Mac-clients. Network drives based on WSS 2008 R2 Essentials support integration into domains on the basis of the Active Directory directory service.
