Cisco CPT - Carrier Packet Transport

Product
Developers: Cisco Systems
Date of the premiere of the system: November, 2010
Branches: Telecommunication and communication
Technology: Management systems for performance of network applications

Cisco CPT (Carrier Packet Transport is operator package transport) is the solution for upgrade of operator transport infrastructures which need to support such IP services of new generation as video, mobility and "cloud" calculations. The new solution combines reliability of a transport network with efficiency of package technologies, allowing to deliver the current and future services successfully.

The dynamic distributed nature of video, mobile services and "cloud" calculations changes in the most radical way the nature of network traffic and causes rapid growth of volumes of the transmitted data. The available technologies do not cope with this flow any more and cannot effectively deliver the advanced network services.

Possibilities of modern technology of multiplexing with channel separation on time and synchronous optical/digital network hierarchy are obviously insufficient for effective processing of new, advanced services. The Cisco CPT system gives to a transport platform flexibility and efficiency of a packet network, allowing to adapt quickly and dynamically transport networks to requirements of new applications at simultaneous reduction of a capital expenditure. Besides, the Cisco CPT system maintains reliability, stability and predictability and also all functionality necessary for operation, management and technical support.

Cisco CPT is the first platform in the industry supporting a standard transport profile with multiprotocol label switching (MPLS-TP), completely compatible to MPLS technology which works on such Cisco routers as Cisco ASR 9000 and Cisco CRS-3. It gives the following advantages:

  • Trust. The standard, widespread IP/MPLS technology integrated with standard MPLS-TP technology allows to integrate reliability of the transport layer and the guaranteed delivery of services with efficiency and service flexibility of package technologies. As a result the payback of new solutions accelerates, the broad compatibility is reached them and protection of investments is provided.
  • Economy. Integrating a set of the interface levels, the Cisco CPT system releases neither more nor less 60 percent of rack space and reduces energy consumption by 65 percent.
  • Flexibility. Accounting of features of services helps with the Cisco CPT system to operators economically, using one network, to meet future requirements of "cloud" calculations, high-quality video services, mobile transport, multipoint services of Ethernet and services "point-to-point" and also transport services of the network layer 1 (dedicated lines and optical links).

A system is issued in 6-shelf (Cisco CPT 600) and two-shelf (Cisco CPT 200) options with the satellite device (Cisco CPT 50). The Cisco CPT system supports MPLS-TP technology, Ethernet networks with ample opportunities of quality management (QoS) and virtual local private networks (VLAN), optical transport networks and the recustomized multiplexers of optical input-output (ROADM).

Now the Cisco CPT systems pass field tests at several operators. Emergence of these systems in the market is expected in the first quarter 2011 calendar year.

Cisco PRIME (Premier Integrated Network Management Experience) is the high-quality integrated functionality of management of networks). This multivendor software solution supports integrated management of MPLS and MPLS-TP technologies, considerably simplifying operation and reducing current expenses. Now two models of implementation Cisco PRIME are available:

  • the unified intuitive graphic user interface installed in the uniform domain for setup of a configuration, selection of resources and management of optical connections and the MPLS connections;
  • autonomous model for separate management of MPLS technology and optical links.
