2024: Sentence - 14 years in prison for the murder of the Sputnik V vaccine developer

On March 15, 2024, the Khoroshevsky Court of Moscow sentenced the accused of the murder of a senior researcher at the Gamaleya Center Andrei Botikov, the developer of the Sputnik V vaccine. Alexei Zmanovsky was sentenced to 14 years in prison. This was reported by Kommersant.

Zmanovsky was found guilty of murder (part 1 of article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and two episodes of theft (article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), the press service of the court said. The defendant will serve his sentence in a special regime colony. In addition, he was fined 80 thousand rubles.

According to the investigation, in March 2023, Alexei Zmanovsky provided Botikov with "intimate services" in his apartment. The scientist was dissatisfied with the quality of the services provided, on the basis of this a conflict arose, during which Zmanovsky strangled Botikov with a belt. The defendant pleaded guilty.

Andrey Botikov is a co-author of the Sputnik V vaccine patent. In June 2021, the president Russia Vladimir Putin signed a decree awarding Botikov the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, II degree.

The Sputnik V vaccine has been approved in 71 countries, and the Sputnik Light vaccine created on its basis in more than 30 states (by March 2024).[1]
