2024: Sentence - 5 years in prison in the case of embezzlement of $1 million from an entrepreneur who wanted to make money on the BitFinex crypto exchange

In early April 2024, it became known that Moscow the Tverskoy District Court sentenced Rustam Rakhmetov, general director of Intrand LLC, and Artur Kudeli, deputy director of Assessment-Dako LLC. They stole $1 million from businessman Yan Shishkov, who decided to make money on. to the cryptoexchange BitFinex

According to the investigation, Shishkov in the second half of 2017 decided to make money on cryptocurrency and began to look for specialists in this area. Through his friend, he came out to his friend Kudel, and through that he met Rakhmetov, who is well acquainted with the work of stock exchanges, as well as with cryptocurrency management mechanisms.


According to the Kommersant newspaper, in November 2017, Rakhmetov and Kudel created a criminal group with the aim of stealing funds. At the same time, to give their actions the appearance of entrepreneurial activity, they "found" a legal entity - SinoCapitalGroup, which manages cryptocurrency deposits of clients on various exchanges in Hong Kong.

According to the case file, at first Shishkov made a profit as part of interaction with these persons. However, at the end of 2018, the cryptocurrency market collapsed, and Rakhmetov's unsuccessfully chosen strategy of playing on the exchange led to a sharp decrease in the size of Shishkov's deposit - he demanded a refund. But the defendants said that a loss was recorded on Shishkov's account, and then reported that the remaining funds were completely blocked. After these events, Shishkov turned to law enforcement agencies.

According to the investigation, Kudel and Rakhmetov drew up a fictitious agreement on trust management of funds and a protocol to it, concluded between Shishkov and the general director of SinoCapitalGroup, a certain Peggi Lau. As a result, the court found Rakhmetov and Kudel guilty of one episode of fraud on an especially large scale (part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and appointed them, respectively, five years in a general regime colony with a fine of 800 thousand rubles and four years with the same fine.[1]
