2024: Sentence - 21 years in prison for spying for Russia
In late April 2024, former National Security Agency (US) employee Jareh Sebastian Dalk was sentenced to 21 years in prison for attempting to spy for Russia.
According to the US Department of Justice, during his time at the NSA, Dalk was responsible for ensuring the security of IT systems. According to the ministry, in September 2022, through e-mail, he sent excerpts from secret documents to a person whom he mistakenly considered an employee of Russian intelligence services. As a result, Dalke handed over to an undercover FBI agent five files that contained top-secret data, as well as an appeal in Russian. In return, he counted on the promised reward of $85 thousand.
Dalk explained his actions in a conversation with an FBI agent by the desire to "achieve change" in American policies that harm the whole world. In addition, the ex-NSA employee noted that he must pay off debts in the amount of $237 thousand. At the same time, for the information printed by him, he requested $85 thousand, and also promised cooperation in the future.
On April 24, 2024, Jareh Sebastian Dalk pleaded guilty to six counts of attempting to transfer classified national defense information. At a court hearing, he confirmed that he understood how this data could be used by Russia to the detriment of the United States.
This defendant, sworn to defend our country, believed he was selling classified national security information... This sentence demonstrates that those who try to betray our country will be held accountable for their crimes, ― Attorney General Merrick Garland said. |
FBI director Christopher Wray stressed that the sentence imposed on Dalk should be a harsh warning for everyone that betrayal is fraught with consequences.[1]
