2024: Development of an audible alert system for scooters

Kar Systems has developed a sound alert system for SunRent sharing scooters. The project is being implemented to improve the safety and visibility of electric scooters on the roads. Skolkovo reported this on May 3, 2024.

THOR AVAS sound designers, a project of Kar Systems, have developed sound samples for SunRent electric scooter sharing, taking into account the specifics and values of the brand, as well as compliance with the rules of existing AVAS systems.

The harmonious bland melody, which changes depending on pressing the speed handle, will help pedestrians and other participants in the movement by ear determine the range of the approaching scooter, understand its actions - whether it is gaining speed, or reduce momentum to stop. About 5 seconds before the scooter approaches, the pedestrian will be able to hear a warning sound and step aside in advance, avoiding a collision. In addition, the sound system will add an element of brand identity to SunRent and increase its recognition.

Our idea was to keep scooters safe to drive and meet the requirements for AVAS on the one hand, and on the other to assemble a sound package that reflected the SunRent brand's key values, namely movement, energy and sunlight. In addition, thanks to the sounds, users can get a pleasant experience when driving a scooter, - commented Alexey Stepanyuk, THOR sound designer.

The acoustic warning system for scooters consists of a one-inch speaker with an electronic module that reads signals from the gas handle and reproduces all engine cycles.

Electric scooters are an integral part of the transport system of cities, they are everywhere and they are quite quiet, while fast and heavy. An unplanned meeting with them can lead to serious consequences for all participants. The development of the THOR team significantly reduces the risks of scooters hitting pedestrians, warning them in advance about the approach of scooters. At the same time, the sounds are designed in such a way that they do not create additional noise pollution in the city and take into account many parameters: from the speed of transport to the time of day and its location, - said Kirill Zhanaidarov, director of the transport department of the Skolkovo Foundation.
