2024: Sentence - 24 years in prison for wife's murder

On May 13, 2024, the Specialized Interdistrict Court of Astana in criminal cases sentenced Kuandyk Bishimbayev to 24 years in a maximum security (maximum security) colony for the murder of his wife Saltanat Nukenova. The former Minister of National Economy of Kazakhstan was found guilty of murder with particular cruelty and torture, he will serve his sentence in a maximum security colony.

As established by the investigation and the court, on November 9, 2023, Kuandyk Bishimbaev twice beat 31-year-old Saltanat Nukenova in a restaurant, after which she spent several hours in a VIP booth unconscious and died.

The ex-minister tried to prove that his wife provoked him to do this with her behavior, and also that he had no intention of killing her. However, this did not convince the jury. Bishimbayev's term for corruption, as well as the state of intoxication in which he was at the time of the murder, was recognized as aggravating circumstances.

The court also sentenced Bishimbayev's relative and the owner of the BAU restaurant where the crime occurred. Bakhytzhan Bayzhanov was found guilty of concealment and sentenced to four years in prison.

The court decided to recover from Kuandyk Bishimbayev more than 3 million tenge ($5224 at the exchange rate as of May 13, 2024) for conducting forensic examinations and 103.5 thousand tenge ($235) to the victim compensation fund. Baizhanov will have to contribute 69 thousand tenge (about $156) to this fund. In his last speech in court, the ex-Minister of Economy of Kazakhstan stated the following:

If you believe in the highest beginning, in God, and I believe, then you understand what he is testing us, whether we want it or not. Every day we pass his test for the highest moral values. On that night from November 8 to 9, I did not pass this test. I have insulted all the best that is in each of the people. I understand this deeply, worry and repent.[1]
