2024: No diamond mining plan for copper business focus
In May 2024, it was announced that Anglo American Plc would stop mining diamonds, platinum and coal as part of a massive restructuring to reject a £34bn ($43bn) takeover bid from rival BHP Group and turn mining firm Anglo American into a copper giant.
The mining company will sell or split the De Beers diamond business.
BHP's proposal, which Anglo has already twice rejected, forced it to take the step, but it also came in response to pressure from shareholders who demanded less profitable businesses be disposed of and focus on copper assets, which are the envy of the industry.
