2024: Attempt

In early September 2023, an attempt was made on the former chairman of the customs committee of the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) Yuri Afanasyevsky. The details of this case became known to the Kommersant newspaper, which refers to the materials of the investigation.

It follows from them that a 32-year-old resident of Lugansk Vera Biryuk, who acted on the instructions of the Ukrainian special services, tried to kill Yuri Afanasyevsky.

According to the newspaper, in Telegram Biryuk met a curator who invited her to Kyiv. Presumably, a man who is an employee of the SBU handed over to a woman a protected smartphone Ulefone Power Armor 13, as well as 20 thousand hryvnia (approximately 46 thousand rubles at the exchange rate as of May 17, 2024). For a reward, Biryuk was supposed to take the phone to Lugansk and deliver it to Afanasyevsky.

In August 2023, a woman, contacting Afanasyevsky, told him that she had a small gift (a smartphone can be bought for 20-25 thousand rubles) for a customs officer from his friend, and the ex-head of the LPR customs committee made a meeting for her in the park at his house. Vera Biryuk appeared on her in a short skirt and a red wig - all this, according to the organizers of the action, should have dulled the vigilance of the future victim. The woman called herself a stranger's name.

According to the investigation, Biryuk on September 3, 2023 handed over to Afanasyevsky a phone with an explosive device. The explosion injured not only Afanasyevsky, but also his son, who helped the man set up the phone for full-fledged work. The explosion occurred at the moment when Afanasyevsky's son turned on the device, and it connected to the mobile network. The bomb in the gadget was detonated automatically. Both men were sent to intensive care for multiple wounds but were later discharged home.[1]
