Start of public beta testing of the server OS
Selectel, an independent provider of IT infrastructure services in Russia, announced to TAdviser on July 24, 2024 the start of public beta testing of its own enterprise-class server operation system based on Linux.
According to the developers, the solution is aimed at providing comprehensive support for customer IT infrastructure by monitoring versions of installed software and advanced technical support and is ready to work with high-load systems.
As part of the beta testing, the client will already be able to use the OS directly to solve work problems. The set of tools available in the operating system will allow users to work with virtualization systems, web servers, LDAP system and monitoring systems, as well as manage databases, back up and work with containers. In addition, integration with Selectel cloud services and S3 object storage is provided.
The operating system can be deployed on both new servers and those already in use by the client. In addition, it can be installed on user servers located outside the Selectel loop. The provider also provides uninterrupted technical support, which is critical for customers who do not have a large IT staff, the company emphasized.
"At the alpha testing stage, we noted a certain interest in the operating system from more than 200 customers," said Igor Lepikhin, head of software and hardware solutions at Selectel. "Thanks to user engagement and detailed feedback, we were able to identify the most relevant set of features for customers and take this into account in the early stages of solution development." |
According to him, as of July 2024, Selectel continues to optimize the user experience and integrate support for software versions that are relevant to customers, as well as improve the support process. One of the important goals for the company is to work out the process of migrating users to the OS in order to prepare the product for commercial launch, which is planned to be carried out before the end of 2024.
Product Development
On May 22, 2024, it became known that the cloud provider Selectel is creating its own operating system for server hardware. We are talking about a platform based on the Linux kernel, which "allows you to run several application programs at the same time on various devices."
Sheets The newspaper "" told about the project, referring to a number of sources, including Sergei Pimkov, Deputy General Director for the Development and Operation of Selectel Products. It is assumed that the new OS will appear before the end of 2024, and in the future it will be finalized.
Servers OS are designed for the simultaneous operation of many users and (or) services, and therefore special requirements are imposed on them. Such platforms make it possible to manage the infrastructure, perform hardware virtualization, deploy various services in the cloud infrastructure, etc. Therefore, reliability, high security, and scalability are required.
The server OS should be used when round-the-clock infrastructure availability is required, and the probability of failures should be minimized, says Alexey Kovalenya, technical director of DataRu. |
The release of its own server OS will be Selectel's first step towards entering the infrastructure software market. The operating system is suitable for companies with both their own and leased IT infrastructure, organizations from the financial and banking sectors, retailers, developers of IT solutions, etc. As part of the platform, Selectel will offer customers a set of tools for backup, virtualization and database management, as well as other promising solutions in areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. The company will be able to provide customers with a more stable environment for the operation of commercial software within their business processes, as well as an expanded level of technical support.[1]
