2024: In Kazakhstan, locusts began to be controlled using drones

In Kazakhstan, drones are being introduced to monitor and control locusts, which will significantly increase the effectiveness of phytosanitary inspections. This decision was made at the end of May 2024 at a meeting of the operational headquarters for locust control under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin.

According to the operational headquarters, phytosanitary services in the regions will receive special drones to monitor locust larvae. These devices will allow you to quickly draw up accurate phytosanitary maps and process infected areas. The Ministry of Agriculture is also considering subsidizing the purchase of drones to treat crops from pests.

Drones are being introduced in Kazakhstan to monitor and control locusts

The ministry said that in all regions of Kazakhstan there are already local headquarters coordinated by deputy akims of the regions. According to forecasts, the area to be processed will amount to 2.5 million hectares. The largest processing areas are planned in Aktobe (784.4 thousand hectares) and Kostanay (775.6 thousand hectares) regions where it is necessary to fight the Italian pond.

Due to cold weather in the eastern, northern and central regions, the degeneration and development of locust larvae are delayed. Nevertheless, processing work has already begun in Aktobe (10.8 thousand hectares), Almaty (0.2 thousand hectares), Atyrau (0.8 thousand hectares), Zhambyl (5.1 thousand hectares), Zhetysu (0.7 thousand hectares) and West Kazakhstan (0.6 thousand hectares) regions.

Cleaning from Moroccan locusts in Turkestan and Zhambyl regions is almost completed. In the Turkestan region, 255.3 thousand hectares were processed, which is 94% of the planned areas, and in the Zhambyl region - 9.7 thousand hectares, or 99.5%.

Serik Zhumangarin stressed that the use of drones demonstrates high efficiency in the fight against locusts. "Drones show effectiveness in locust control. It is very difficult to cover such areas with processing in a short period of the active phase of locust production in the traditional way - on foot and on machines. There is a high probability of shortcomings. The Ministries of Agriculture, Industry and Construction need to work out the issue of investment subsidies for drones for processing crops from pests, "he said[1]
