2024: Product Announcement

At the end of May 2024, the French company Mistral AI confirmed the launch of a new open AI model Codestral - the first large language model (LLM) to help developers write code.

Mistral AI is supported by Amazon and is known for its Mistral and Mixtral language models. However, the Codestral model should raise the bar of language models to a new height, as it is able to generate code in more than 80 programming languages, including Python, Java, C, C++, JavaScript, Bash, Swift and Fortran.

Mistral AI confirms launch of new open AI model Codestral

Working in English, the new language model will be able to perform coding tasks, write tasks on its own and use the mechanism of "filling" partially generated code. The program is also designed to reduce the risk of errors in the code of those companies and developers who use Codestral.

The developers compared the capabilities of Codestral 22B with the characteristics of the CodeLlama 70B, DeepSeek Coder 33B and Llama 3 70B models. According to the test results, Codestral uses fewer parameters, but according to the results of various tests, it showed quite good results in generating code in Python, SQL and other programming languages.

In an official post published on the company's blog, the new AI model for generating code was described as "open," but this is a rather controversial statement. The license prohibits the use of Codestral for any commercial purpose, and in addition, the terms of the agreement exclude "any internal use of the AI model by company employees in the context of the company's business activities."

For those who want to get to know the new Codestral model better, the developers offer to go to the Le Chat network, expand the list of AI models under the prompt window and select Codestral for verification.[1]
