Gluten

2023: Gluten sales up 38%

In 2023, approximately 43 thousand tons of gluten (gluten) were produced in Russia. For comparison, a year earlier the output was 31.2 thousand tons. Thus, an increase of 37.9% was recorded, as stated in the BusinesStat report submitted on May 24, 2024.

Gluten is widely used in various industries due to its chemical properties. In particular, gluten is in demand in the bakery and confectionery industries, as well as in the production of instant noodles. In addition, gluten is used in some cosmetics, animal and fish feed, sports nutrition, etc. It is noted that the interest of Russian manufacturers in the production of gluten is growing: in particular, new projects are being implemented to build plants for deep processing of grain, including with the aim of producing wheat gluten.

According to estimates, in 2019, gluten sales in Russia amounted to 37.4 thousand tons. However, in 2020, a sharp decline followed: the volume of sales collapsed by 45.4% - up to 20.4 thousand tons. Against the background of weak domestic demand, the export distribution channel was actively developing, which accounted for 73% of the total mass of shipments. So, compared to 2019, supplies to Norway increased significantly - by 57.4%, or 10.9 thousand tons.

In 2022-2023, due to the imposed sanctions and logistical difficulties, supplies to Norway and the United States decreased significantly. At the same time, the development of the food industry in Russia with an eye to import substitution had a positive impact on the growth of sales of gluten within the country. As a result, in 2022, demand jumped by 46.9% compared to 2021 - from 21.2 thousand tons to 31.2 thousand tons. In general, in 2019-2023, gluten sales on the Russian market increased by 14.9%.[1]
