2024: Powerful DDoS attack
On June 16, 2024, the St. Petersburg telecom operator PACT announced a massive DDoS attack on its IT infrastructure, which continues for the second day. Cybercriminals disrupted the functioning of systems, some services do not work.
The company said in an official statement that the attackers used combined tactics. Total malicious traffic at peak moments twice exceeded the network workload.
We inform you that our infrastructure has been subjected to a powerful DDoS attack for the second day. In this regard, interruptions in the operation of our services are possible, such as a decrease in speed and difficulties in opening sites. We are working hard to restore the stable operation of our services as soon as possible, the PACT notice says. |
Cybercriminals have engaged several attack vectors: this is the destruction of network connectivity by overloading the control components of routers, the exhaustion of upstream bandwidth and the disruption of the company's main DNS servers. In addition, PACT reports attacks on various services, such as public elements of a personal account, website, payment gateway, etc. An attack was made on the iPakt Internet television service.
The registered number of attacking addresses is estimated at 2.5 million. The company's web services received up to several tens of thousands of requests per second, and these requests were specially designed as legitimate, which made it difficult to counter.
Unfortunately, during the attack, our service for some customers was temporarily unavailable. We regret this and are currently developing long-term plans to improve the network and software architecture so that when the attack repeats, we can better and faster protect the services of our customers, the PACT emphasizes.[1] |
