2023: Supplies of foreign essential oils to Russia decreased by 27% over the year
In 2023, imports of essential oils to Russia amounted to approximately 564.7 tons. This is almost 27% less compared to 2022, when purchases were estimated at 769.5 tons. The reason for the decline was the decline in supplies from India and Germany, as stated in the BusinesStat review, published at the end of June 2024.
The statistics take into account purchases of such types of oils as clove, tea tree, ylang-ylang, mint, citrus fruits, extracted and a number of others (coriander oil, lavender, fir, cedar). It is noted that primarily those products are imported into Russia, the production of which is not established in the country. For example, in the Russian Federation, orange and lemon oils are practically not produced due to climatic conditions. Each type of essential oil has unique properties and often cannot be replaced by another. As a result, enterprises are forced to purchase foreign raw materials.
In 2019, it is estimated that 497.3 tons of essential oils were imported to Russia. In 2020, there was a 24.4% jump to 618.7 tons. In 2021, purchases decreased by 3.1%, amounting to 599.7 tons. In 2022, a significant increase followed: the volume of imports rose by 28.3%, reaching 769.5 tons.
The study says that prices have a significant impact on the volume of purchases of foreign products. The cost of essential oils in the domestic market often turns out to be higher than import prices in ruble terms. Leading enterprises in the industry include Ekovita, Mirrolla Lab, VGMZ Sarepta, Teresa-Inter and Vitamin Product. Among the key areas of application of essential oils are the food industry, medicine and pharmacy, veterinary medicine, cosmetology and the chemical industry. In addition, such oils serve as[1] agents[2].
