2024: Car recall due to airbag malfunction
BMW is recalling more than 390,000 vehicles in the U.S. because of faulty airbags that could explode when triggered. This was announced in July 2024 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
According to Fox News, the recall applies to some BMW 3 Series sedans and Sportwagon models that were produced between 2006 and 2012.
The cars can be fitted with a Takata PSDI-5 airbag steering wheel, which was installed by the owners after purchase, even if it was not officially approved by BMW as a spare part.
According to NHTSA, the inflator was found to be PSDI-5 susceptible to rupture after years of exposure to persistent high temperatures and humidity as a result of studies conducted by Takata and independent researchers. The explosion of the airbag inflator can lead to sharp metal fragments hitting the driver and passengers. This can lead to injury and death.
The faulty airbags were made by Japanese parts manufacturer Takata. The company was once the world's leading airbag supplier, but filed for bankruptcy in 2017 after recalls. Since 2009, more than 30 deaths and hundreds of injuries have been linked to Takata airbags in cars from various automakers.
In May 2023, BMW issued a warning asking 'not to drive' for 90,000 older Takata airbag models in the US, including the 2000-2006 BMW 3 Series (E46), including the M3, 2000-2003 5 Series (E39), including the M5, and 2000-2004 X5s (E53).[1]
