2024: Product Announcement

In July 2024, the Russian company NII Steel, part of the Kalashnikov concern of the Rostec state corporation, presented a new Egida-U anti-crash blanket capable of protecting unarmored cars from drone attacks. Video demonstration of the protective properties of the product was carried out as part of the "Our Crash" project.

According to TASS, the Aegis-U tests were carried out with an imitation of an FPV drone hitting the roof of a car. To do this, a F-1 grenade was placed on the roof of the car covered with an armored duvet. When detonating, the body of the car was pierced by a high-explosive effect, but the fragments did not penetrate the interior, which confirmed the effectiveness of the protection.

Dmitry Chumachenko, head of the department of structural protection schemes at the Research Institute of Steel, explained that the damage could be reduced by increasing the distance between the body and the blanket. He also noted that the Aegis-U is already being used to protect the wheels of equipment from fragmentation damage in combat conditions.

Aegis-U is an improved version of the basic Aegis model. With a weight increase of only 2 kg, the new modification is able to protect against fragments flying at speeds up to 650 m/s, while the basic version is effective against fragments at speeds up to 450 m/s.

Tests carried out at the TsNIITOCHMASH training ground showed that Aegida-U provides 100% protection against F-1 and RGN grenades at distances of 3 and 5 meters. Moreover, the blanket is able to stop Stechkin's pistol bullet from a distance of 5 meters.

The Egida-U anti-chip blanket is a multilayer structure based on high-strength ballistic aramid fabric and ultra-high-molecular weight high-density polyethylene. The dimensions of the product are 1x2 meters, and the weight is just over 10 kg. The blanket retains its protective properties in the temperature range from -40 to + 40 degrees Celsius[1]
