2024: Product Announcement

In early July 2024, Google announced the release of a specialized software interface (API) that provides medical professionals with direct access to vital signs of Fitbit fitness bracelet owners . A tool called the Fitbit Web API is expected to more effectively warn against health-threatening conditions.

This information helps, in particular, to detect atrial fibrillation - arrhythmia a heart rhythm disorder that is characterized by frequent, chaotic agitation and contraction of atrial muscle fibers. The symptoms of atrial fibrillation can vary: these are weakness, a feeling of chronic fatigue, shortness of breath with the slightest physical activity, restless sleep, insomnia, anxiety at night, feeling compressed and dull pain in the chest area, dizziness and fainting, and sweating independent of physical activity and air temperature.

Previously, to transfer data on the work of the heart to doctors, the owners of Fitbit fitness trackers had to manually export indicators. With the advent of the Fitbit Web API, the process is greatly simplified: it is enough for the user to give his consent to the processing of information, after which it can be transferred to medical professionals through a secure connection.

Google believes that this approach expands the capabilities of medical institutions to serve patients. For example, by detecting signs of atrial fibrillation, doctors will be able to schedule the necessary examination in advance. In addition, public health programs may be developed for large groups of people at higher risk of developing the ailment.^[1]
