2024: Dismissal after collective complaints

In mid-July 2024, it became known that the governor of the Sverdlovsk region, Yevgeny Kuyvashev, signed an order to dismiss Boris Meylakh, chief physician of the Sverdlovsk Regional Oncological Dispensary (SOD). The decision to remove the head of the medical institution was made after numerous complaints from the team about the unsatisfactory organization of work in the dispensary.

According to Medvestnik, Boris Meylakh headed the SOD in January 2022. During his leadership, it was possible to return to the staff a group of experienced specialists who had previously left the dispensary. However, in May 2024, employees of the medical institution filed a collective complaint with the head of the region and the regional Ministry of Health, expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in the dispensary.

The appeal of the SOD team contained serious complaints about the activities of the chief physician. Employees claimed that under Meylakh's leadership, the main goal of the institution's work was to make a profit, while the issues of prevention, early diagnosis and rehabilitation of cancer patients faded into the background. Doctors also pointed to the sole decision-making of the head physician regarding the methods and volumes of surgical interventions without taking into account the opinion of the heads of departments and the consent of patients.

Of particular concern to medical personnel was the policy of saving on the procurement of chemotherapy drugs, disinfectants and medical devices. In particular, there was a lack of purchases of accompanying drugs included in the standards of treatment, such as specialized nutrition, modern antiemetics, anticoagulants and analgesics. Patients received treatment with the cheapest chemotherapy regimens, which, according to the team, negatively affected the quality of therapy and survival rates.

In their appeal, employees demanded the resignation of Boris Meylakh, threatening mass dismissal if their demands were ignored. The team expressed extreme concern about the situation in the oncological dispensary and its potential consequences for patients.[1]
